Even though Goodfellas is a better crafted piece of cinema, I'm glad Dances with Wolves won best picture. Costner masterfully balanced the epic landscape of classic American westerns with a story that subverts the mythos-based caricatures associated with them. I have little doubt that the film will be one day valued as one of the greatest American films.
