A shuffle back into nostalgia that doesn’t disappoint. Maria was beautifully portrayed by Rachel Zeglar whose performance was pitch perfect in every way. She wasn’t quite matched by her counterpart in Tony who was more preppy than gangster, but boy he could sing. The iconic music and dance scenes carried it through any other characterisation hiccups that can arise in this genre with racial stereotyping becoming a barrier to keeping the characters authentic and dynamic. Must admit, went through a few tissues though, as this musical take on Romeo and Juliet is pure tragedy.
