This book tells the almost unbelievable story of a black boy in Georgia who ran away from home and achieve wonderful things. He was helped along the way by many kindly people and eventually made his goal of reaching Paris. There, he had success as a boxer, as a soldier in the French Foreign Legion, as a fighter pilot and a machine gunnert Returning to civilian life, he became a successful Parisian nightclub owner, becoming friends with Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and many other celebrities. He fought in the second world war, received several injuries, and eventually was "discovered" as a lift attendant in a New York Skyscraper. This led to his appearance on a television programme, where his amazing exploits - and his 15 medals - were revealed. What a man, and what a life. Some details are a little hazy, but isn't that to be expected? A long and exciting read, with realistic descriptions of the horror of war. Thoroughly recommended!
