This movie is amazing! I watched it at midnight on July 2 and six times more since including once at the theater. It is now on a continuous loop in my home. The music, the history and the emotions of those who were there combine to make it a must watch. Watching Marilyn McCoo watch her younger self and speak of the hurt the 5th Dimension felt at being criticized for sounding “too white” is emotional. Sly and the Family Stone bring a unique approach with their mixed race funky sound that was such a new concept at the time. Musa Jackson provides such a beautiful commentary from one who was there. Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder and David Ruffin bring the Motown flavor. Nina Simone is incredible in her justifiable rage combined with pride and visibly moves the audience. Cancel culture is not new. As one commentator states in the film, “ We hold these truths to be self evident, that black history will be erased”. Questlove did an amazing job unerasing and bringing this brilliant piece of history back to life.
