I found the movie pretentious, heavy handed, and frankly boring until Tom Hanks and Robin Wright appeared (they were both great). Also the back and forth in time periods was confusing. Did they REALLY have to go back to the era of the La Brea tar pits??? It got more interesting as the two main actors aged and I could relate better to their stage in life. (Kudos to AI in this case in de-aging Hanks and Wright, perhaps others; one of the few "good" uses of AI in the movie industry, presumably with the actors' concurrence.) I think Paul Bettany, as the Hanks' character's father, stole the show. He played a classic father type that I remember growing up.
