You need to watch this. The film Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, directed by Obomsawin, follows the events of the Oka conflict of 1990. The Oka conflict ensued because the city of Oka decided, with the approval of a judge, that they were going to build a 9-hole golf course, on top of a sacred Mohawk burial ground. The people of Kanehsatake barricaded the entrance of the grounds, in resistance to the injustice that was taking place. The protest transformed into a multiple month long combat against military troops sent by the Canadian federal government. This film addresses the harms perpetuated against Indigenous communities in Canada, while simultaneously highlighting the resistance against these very injustices.
