I disliked the sexism in the series. This script could have benefited from having a female writer.
Sam's character in particular was written in a sexist way. Coming in strong, he made fun of Bucky for getting beat by a girl in the trailer. Next, after Bucky and his sister got acquainted and they seemed to be on good terms, Sam made sure to tell Bucky not to flirt with his sister... As if she needed Sam's protection...
In the series, Sam's sister was portrayed as someone who could speak her mind and take care of herself. She was clearly not uncomfortable. Sam doing this paints the picture that women can't talk for themselves. They're all adults. If Sam thought that Bucky was bothering her, she should have asked her and if she felt uncomfortable. Once establishing that she felt uncomfortable, it would then be ok for him to ask if she wanted him to intervene.
The behaviour was rather concerning because young people watch these shows and aspire to be just like these heroes. This behaviour should not be normalized.
It seemed like they tried to make the series not sexist by including strong women characters that weren't love interests like Sharon Carter, Karli, and the Dora Milaje. It's too bad the two of strongest women characters in the series with the most screen time were either corrupt or immature.
I really liked how strong, independent, smart, and pure-intentioned Peggy Carter was in her series so I was excited when Sharon Carter shared her traits when she was first introduced. Seeing how two-faced Sharon Carter is now, I'm really hoping for a good explanation of her character arc. Part of me is still hopeful that she's a good character and is doing a sting operation on her own. I'm hoping that she hasn't lost the characteristics that made me like her in the first place.
While I enjoyed some scenes and the overall plot, the sexism left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm glad that the series addressed systematic racism. I also like Sam as Captain America/ the Falcon but the writing could have been better. Marvel can do better than this. With their budget they could have easily had someone qualified go over the script.
