I started Gilmore Girls (2000) in lock down. I loved how the show was centered between these two lovely beautiful women who could uplift and support each other through thick and thin. I loved Lorelais fast pace talking and Rory's humor. I loved every single one of the characters (even Kirk).
But... (ohh there's always a but) what a big fat slap to my face it was, when I watched Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The show lost its charm, the small town felt suffocating not just for the viewers but for the characters in the show too! It was unbelievable to me that Lorelai and Luke STILL hadn't married/tied the knot even though it's been a decade!
Rory.. oh my god. Let's be honest- she hasn't always been good at making choices and some of them have even broken relationships but to think that this chatacter is STILL like that 9 years later.. alone, unemployed, hateful, spiteful, and most of all a cheater!
My soul was crying from the inside everytime a new episode of AYITL loaded on screen. The musical was useless, Michel deciding to leave was.. okay but again- you're telling me that Lorelai couldn't find a replacement for Sookie? I know she wasn't there so the dynamics of Lorelai, Sookie and Michel dismantled, that's for sure but there were tons of people who were as talented as her then why couldn't Lorelai just let go and get somebody to help her out at the Inn?
Luke was somehow still not okay with Lorelai bonding with April, just like how it was 9 years ago, when April first walked into that diner. I don't understand why Luke was written like that and maybe I never will but it still doesn't change the fact that I hated it. He somehow also had a problem when Lorelai mentioned that Michel wanted the Inn to have a spa and then perhaps he would consider staying. Luke's reaction was uncalled for- "NO, YOU DON'T NEED MORE!"
Everything, and I mean everything in this show was useless, hurtful or resentful. As much as I love Emily, she still held some kind of resent that her daughter left home but its been more than 30 years now, maybe the show could have focused more on mending Lorelai and Emily's relationship instead of adding more bargaining into it?
Now, I understand that at some point in life, every person hits rock bottom but I also know that people seem to jump out of it but this revival just pushed the characters into rock bottom and never brought the characters back from it.
