Careful: minor spoilers.
This movie is based on a book. It's about a lonely, sad, and yes estranged Czech Astronaut, Jakub. Well I didn't here a single "Ahoy" in this movie so who knows?
We learn Czekoslavakia has a formidable space presence.
And we have Adam Sandler in space playing a familiar character. Someone eventually having a breakthrough despite their flaws. But it's a long road to that realization. Very long. He keeps his performance quite minimal in this one which was strange given the fact he has some range which would have been nice to see since his character is quite nuanced. But sadly, the audience doesn't get to see it.
Charming alien, and interesting take on an alternate future where branding has taken a foothold on culture.
I really wanted to like this film more. A lot to tackle considering the scope of this narrative and the enormous task of doing justice to a novel. Watch it if your a sci-fi buff like I am, and tired of humans fighting space creatures. if anything, it's a little Interstellar with the epiphany moment and and a little Arrival for all the flashbacks, not forwards and not breaking any new ground for this one.
I'd like to hear your thoughts.
