I grew up during the Blair witch phenomena and it was supposed to be the scariest movie ever made. Even as an adolescent I found it to be extremely underwhelming up until the last 3 minutes and thought it was just 2 guys and an extremely irritating woman running around in circles in the woods finding rock piles and screaming at each other about a map. I’ve seen it three times because when it’s over I completely forget about it. Skinamarink is more of what I feel like Blair witch was striving for. I do think that there were scenes that could have been edited shorter and that every camera angle didn’t need to be so obscure but I do think they achieved the feeling of constant dread I didn’t feel from Blair witch. There were some scenes like the parents sitting in the bedroom and the whispering voices that were genuinely creepy and disturbing. The relatability of this movie was what makes it better than I think some of the negative reviews claim. I was a kid that used to sleep walk and used to turn on the light downstairs in my living room and stare at the off tv thinking I was in a dream until I would blink or move in a way they made me realize my eyes were open and what I was seeing wasn’t a dream. I also have had sleep paralysis and hallucinations since I was probably 4 years old and there were a few times when I had a fever that my mom would put those weird vintage cartoon vhs’ on for me and id fall asleep and wake up to different parts of them. So I was able to relate to this as someone with sleep disorders and grew up in the 90s. It’s a movie you don’t really think too much of while you’re watching it but keeps coming back to you a few days after you watch it and scares you more when you think about it at those random times.

Imagine if N@zis had a dance party outside of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Jews they were abusing and oppressing finally stood up to them and then those N@zis made a film saying they’ll still dance outside the ghetto…that’s what this film is. Since the moment Zionists started moving to Palestine in the 1880s they had one goal in mind which was to ethnically cleanse the land of its inhabitants to create a Jewish homeland. “To make Palestine as Jewish as England is English,” a quote from the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. As Americans who live in a country that’s media is controlled by AIPAC we have been told many untruths. We’ve been told the land was nearly empty, that Israelites were the rightful owners, that Zionists wanted peace but Palestinians refused, that Israel is the victim not the aggressor, and that Israel has never initiated the violemce they only respond to it. This film is simply more Israeli propaganda. The truth is Palestinians have been living on that land longer and more consistently than any other group of people. The kingdom of Israel was a brief part of a long timeline. Before during and after the kingdom of Israel Moabites, jebusites, Canaanites, and Philistines lived on that land. 87% of Palestinians share dna with Canaanites as opposed to 3% of modern day Israelis. Palestinians share more dna with ancient Israelites than the modern Israelis do. From the moment of the first Aliyah in the late 1800s Zionists have been unwilling to live side by side with Palestinians and for 60 years before their statehood expelled Palestinians with violence and banned them from working on their farms or in their industries. They have never stopped this mission. Israel has committed over 50 massacres of Palestinians, even prompting Albert Einstein to denounce Israel as a N@zi fascist state in an open letter signed by over two dozen Jewish intellectuals. Palestinians have lived under constant oppression and have been labeled as terrorists whenever they take a stand. It’s time for Americans to stop allowing propaganda films like this to dominate the narrative.

This movie shaped my childhood. Not only is it incredibly moving and visually stunning but it believes that children are thoughtful and intelligent enough to deserve a movie and script like this. The cinematography is top tier and adds another unspoken layer to its powerful meaning. The color symbolism of green representing money and greed, black representing death grief and loneliness, and gold representing magic love and friendship is another unspoken layer. Subtleties like Miss minchin revealing the hurt little girl she buried when Sarah asks her if her father ever told her she was a princess with just a painful look instead of having to explain it or dramatize it again shows how highly this director regards children’s intelligence and ability to understand. I would give this movie all the stars in the sky if I could.

I love this movie. It was my gateway drug into A24. I can understand if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but for me it was perfect. I love the nature setting and the ultra modern house. Great cast. This was also my gateway drug into Oscar Isaac. The story is unique which was surprising because so many movies in this subject have already been made. The soundtrack is beautiful. It’s just a very mesmerizing film and I found it very relaxing.

I don’t get why this movie only has a 3.3 rating. It’s so much different from any other movie I’ve seen. Some people I guess were saying it wasn’t scary enough but for me it wasn’t about simply being scary. It was a folktale come to live in a very realistic historical setting. It’s about isolation, paranoia, and religious fanaticism. There’s more a sense of dread than terror. Instead of jump scares it disturbs you and creates an atmosphere of dread. Even though it’s about the supernatural, its subtleties make it more believe and it never feels over the top. Two of my favorite movies are the shining and Rosemarys baby which I guess also are consider “slow burners” but all three of these movies transport you to another life for two hours

Ive been an omen fan since I accidentally watched it as a child in the 90s on hbo. I had limited expectations going into this movie because I’m such an omen purist and I have to say this movie definitely exceeded my expectations. They really stayed true to the vibe of the original and the casting was excellent. I was really engaged in the story too. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because I reserve that for the best of the best but this movie was 4.5 easily. I thought it was a great addition to the franchise. The setting in Rome was perfect. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lower reviews are because this is a more female centered movie. Not saying they’re misogynistic in any way but typically horror revolves more around men and that’s just what we’re used to
