My absolute favorite movie for Richard Dreyfuss...and he has made many stupendous ones! Jack Noah (Dreyfuss) leaves New York for an average,
low budget film, on set, in this non-existent island dictatorship. In many aspects this film parallels "Casablanca". It has romance, adventure and thrills. The writers throw many curve balls at the audience; which results in a world class movie (unfortunately, this film never received the admiration it deserved.). Watch this film and tell me if Sonia Braga is not at the apex of her career in this marvelous film! Raul Julia plays the sophisticated tyrant of a small island that has guarded and protected a group of "European immigrants" who want to keep a certain, way of life as it was in their home country. The director, Paul Mazursky, provides a depth to the story which makes you feel "..the red tile roofs over the houses in the Bay of Sorrows..".A real holiday through film.
