I'm not sure if I can call this game a masterpiece. I don't like playing games like these cause of the violence but I've seen the walkthroughs to its entirety so I'll give an honest and respectable review as possible.
Positives: the gameplay mechanics, visual graphic, music and performances by the actors were great.
Negatives: too much violence, romance scenes were completely disturbing and unnecessary, the story was written really badly, characters were all unlikable (also cause' they make dumb decisions), things felt out of place to satisfy the plot which doesn't make any sense, a lot was retconned from the first game to satisfy a really bad revenge story, too much politics for certain topics being shoved in the game (I'm not against this, I'm okay with it, just not the way they did it). Also, too much favouritism for the new characters.
The motives for the new characters were understandable, but very hypocritical. Joel's actions from the last game were a little... extreme, but I understood why he did it. One of the new characters said they would be no better than Joel if they killed the others, which irritated me since they already were no better, maybe even worse. Joel never killed people out of revenge, only for self-defence. The game made it seem like the fireflies were competent and saints, even though that's not true. No one in this game are good or bad, they're people forced to make difficult decisions. Even though the ending didn't make sense, I'm glad it ended with one of them sparing the other. Overall, I give it 2 out of 5, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I will always think the first game is better. If I wrote this game, I would've focused on Ellie and Joel's relationship being repaired while dealing with the consequences left from the first game, not on some pointless revenge quest. Bruce Stanley is right, revenge doesn't make sense in a post-apocalypse, as the stakes are higher than normal. I wouldn't use rejected story ideas and I would take in peoples opinions in a respectable manner. If people love the game and say it was great, that's fine.
