Alright, guys. Time for me to share my thoughts on Frozen II. WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
I remember how it was last year, Feb 20th I think, when I happened to see the first teaser-trailer of Frozen II. And that was it. Since then until today, there was barely a day I didn’t google the term “Frozen 2” (I’m from Iran, so you can see how much this story mattered to me in spite of all the terrible living condition we have here). I read many fan theories, and had some of my own. When I saw the young girl and boy in the teaser, and read the theories about them being the younger version of Elsa and Anna’s parents, I couldn’t stop hoping that Frozen II would introduce the parents as Kai and Gerda. It all roots in my passion for the original Hans Christian Anderson story.
I saw the movie, anyway, and I must say, the whole story is amazing, and I absolutely loved it. I only have a few points:
1. It would have been better if Disney did not reveal that Iduna saved Agnarr until the "show yourself" scene. In that case, they would have to avoid 2 scenes: the first is when young Agnarr is looking at young Iduna from among the trees while she is playing with the wind spirit. They should have just shown Agnarr, the wind and the laughing voice; as we can see later, the wind is taking Agnarr away (we saw young Iduna play with the wind before so this gives us a clue to who saved Agnarr), and that Agnarr hears a voice at that moment so we find out this is (probably) the voice of the girl playing with the wind who saved Agnarr. Elsa hears the same voice, so it is spoiled that it’s probably the mother calling to Elsa. The second is the ice sculpture of Iduna holding Agnarr, when Kristoff hints she is saving him. This reveals the voice Elsa hears is her mother’s voice. The fact that Iduna was from Northuldra could have been proved to Yelena and others using the shawl, and the sculpture of the parents was not at all necessary at that point in the movie.
2. There are a few vague points: why did the voice call Elsa after all these years? Why should a fifth spirit be the “snow queen”? Why not any other elements or seasons? Why does Anna have the wind symbol on her dress? Why didn’t Iduna tell Agnarr all these years that she was his savior? Didn’t Agnarr know she was from Northuldra? How could he have not found out she was the savior when the two of them were the only ones who succeeded in leaving the forest?
One thing that disappointed me a little at first was that I thought the mother had autumnal powers based on the trailers, not just playing with the wind, and the autumnal imagery of the film was a reference to their mother, not merely a reference to the wind spirit (a friend of the mother) and change. However, now I think it is more appropriate and beautiful she didn’t have autumnal powers as in that case, we would have to have summer and spring characters, too. Moreover, in that case, Elsa’s power would have been genetic, not gifted as return for her mother’s sacrifice, which is more beautiful.
By the way, I’m quite pleased that the “concept” of “Gerda saving Kai”, whether intentionally or not, is somehow incorporated in Iduna saving Agnarr. Frozen 1 and 2 can somehow make the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale happen. Finally.
Except for those two points, I loved the film. Adorable. And gorgeous autumnal environment. I can see s Frozen III happening where Elsa learns she is not the only 5th spirit but there are 3 others with spring, summer and autumn powers. And would love to see Elsa dating Honeymaren. Thank you, Disney, for this beautiful story.
