When looking at both ensembles that comprise the two sessions put together, one would immediately think that the trio which includes pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Sam Jones would be the one to get the spotlight, especially given their history together accompanying Clifford Jordan; yet the 'Magic Triangle' as they called themselves (when adding drummer Billy Higgins) are not however the highest point in this record. Whereas there's no drop in quality indeed since both quartets are equally powerful, one has to admit that pianist Stanley Cowell and maybe more so bassist Bill Lee are particularly remarkable.
The record flows integrally, which may be surprising when one notes that the tracks from each quartet are mixed in order; the chemistry is breatheable and the energy never descends into anything less than what its own dynamic proposes making for an unique atmosphere from start to end. Providing twelve originals, writing and composition are singular and refreshing; Bill Lee's piece 'John Coltrane' stands out and is as alluring as the legendary tenor-man himself.
