This is a movie that sneaks up on you. After seeing it, I first wondered why both of the lead characters chose such destructive responses to their falling out. What was the point of all that tragedy? But I couldn't get the images out of my mind. The windswept isolation of that particular place is the best answer, I think. These people really don't have much to sustain them or to rely on. So a lifelong friend suddenly refusing to have anything to do with you is truly Padraic's own worst nightmare. And for Colm, simply disappearing without any kind of legacy is the same. So each man digs in, with tragic consequences. It's the kind of movie that makes you think, and riddle, and parse out for yourself. Those are few and far between these days. The incredible landscape, coupled with the hauntingly beautiful score, just complete the package. See it.
