I've been on VRChat for almost a year in VR now, starting in Dec 2018 in desktop mode (you don't need VR gear to play). It's fair to say that it is a heavily anime inspired, influenced social media platform more than a game. You can play games in it but socialising with people from all over the world (and not just English speaking countries) is the main activity. But prepare for some mind altering graphics and chaos. I played desktop for a few weeks before getting a VR headset and now am on VRChat almost daily. A big part of VRChat is the outside of game interaction - Twitter, Twitch, Discord are where you chat with friends and the community outside of the game. Lots of anime-centric memes and jokes. Although the average player age is 17-23, I'm 50 and have been easily accepted. Generally, the community is friendly, funny and quirky as it has traditionally taken a certain type of person to want to get into virtual reality. But like The Matrix, nobody can truly describe what VRChat is like. You have to experience it for yourself and prepare to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
