This is before my watching of the original. I thought it’d be a nice watch and in honesty it was but there were a few things that bothered me.
some good stuff first!
I think the majority of the way Tony and Rudy’s relationship was treated was well done. It gave a nice message, it was easily relatable, it felt pretty good.
When you ignore some of the wonky lip syncing (which I don’t see as a big problem, it’s not extremely noticeable, it’s more the voice actors and the way their voices sound edited sometimes) the animation looks very nice. After watching Monster House and Shrek recently, it’s an upgrade. I know their times of release are well off, but those two are pretty classic and neither of them have amazing animation.
Now a couple of nitpicks I have or things that genuinely bugged me,
1. Mainly, the introduction of Anna to Tony. I didn’t like her focus as a main love interest. I personally don’t think the movie needed a definitive love interest, and it just bugs me as always how she was treated like that’s all she was. In the beginning of the movie I was very interested in her character how she was sarcastic and sort of made me feel like she was on the fence with her brothers’ actions. I liked her until they sort of just threw that away and made her the love interest (which by the way, was weird also because she seduced half the time?)
2. Another Anna point, some of her dialogue made me uncomfortable. Knowing how young she is and I’m sure it wasn’t meant to come out the way it did, but it just made me feel weird and I didn’t like it.
3. The parents in the beginning of the movie give me awful vibes. Tony’s father blamed him for nearly driving off a cliff, and I don’t think that was necessary. You weren’t paying attention to the road, that’s your job when you’re driving. It’s not your son’s fault that you almost did that, don’t put the blame on him? It’s a minor detail but it really awful to me and I actually cried thinking about it. Imagine being blamed for a car crash at the age of 13.
4. Maney’s treatment. (I don’t know how to properly spell his name so I’m sorry if it’s misspelt I’m going off of the captions)
The way Rockerey treated Maney was absolutely awful. I didn’t expect Rockerey to have any character growth, and I once again understand it’s a kid’s movie and he’s one of the antagonists, but there’s a lot of issues that I feel we’re just glanced over for him? I want Maney to get help, I was really worried for him the entire movie and I wanted to know more about him to really get into that empathy with him. Constantly being talked down to, he’s always looking for confirmation and something positive for himself, its really worrying how he acts. I know I’m looking into it too much but I don’t think he had to be bullied the way he was.
I enjoyed this movie, but it had me really passionate about some of the things I mentioned, like the Anna situation and Maney’s treatment. But I do recommend it!
