Updated review after Season 1:
Unpopular opinion, but I feel like seasons 2 and 3 are a lot better than season 1. Actually interested in continuing watching the series, despite Geralt being recast upon Cavill's departure.
(Original review of Season 1: 2 stars)
The animated movie detailing Vesemir's origins is waaaaaay better than the TV show. (I wish the movie were a TV series instead.) I honestly don't understand why the live-action is getting such rave reviews.
It starts off somewhat promising, particularly with Yennefer's storyline, but then...deteriorates into senseless drivel.
Honestly, I'm not interested in watching a whole episode of Yennefer f-king random people for "reasons."
There's also the confusing way that Geralt's, Yennefer's, and Ciri's storylines were initially introduced. (And this is coming from someone who was at least somewhat familiar with the Witcher through the 3rd video game. And yes, I realize the TV show is based on the books, not the games.) Not to mention the ending was a bit of a mess...
I will say that Henry Cavill is perfect for Geralt. And the use of magic and many of the fight scenes are wonderful to watch--the show's saving grace imo. At the end of the day, I wish they would have continued with the more serious tone established in Yennefer's storyline instead of the jarring attempts at more lighthearted humor that came to an annoying head with the bard. Not really a fan of his whole role in the show tbh.
They also overuse the term "destiny." I don't know if that's true of the books, but it's about as annoying as the bard.
Still, I find the lore of Geralt's world fascinating, so I'm hoping Season 2 will show improvement. Like...a lot.
