I've watched this movie more than once because there is so much depth to it and because I loved this movie. The movie takes place on an island off the coast of Ireland (if you've ever been to the Aran Islands you'll recognize some of the scenery). The time is 1923, which is actually an important part of the movie. The War for Independence had been fought and won, but the Civil War that followed was raging--there are references to it and occasionally you can hear the gunfire). While the island is idyllic in its scenery and its distance from the mainland troubles, the island folks have their own type of civil war on a much smaller scale--as well as their own internal wars against loneliness and irrelevancy and rejection. While it is comedic at times, the story is actually quite dark. There is much thoughtful irony in the story and the acting is superb! A masterpiece!
