Movie "critics" reviews of this movie have always incensed me, by saying that it was basically a "long music video" for the album. That is, a lazy, short-sighted view. Yes, none of the performances by the actors in the film would have ever been considered for any type of award. But, the film itself was important for 2 major reasons:
1) It introduced to the larger world, in sight and sound, the smallest inkling of the sheer and expansive musical genius of Prince. An artist who would "revolutionize" the music industry (fitting the name of his backing band, The Revolution), not just in the way music was composed, produced, and marketed, but most importantly, showing musicians how they could lay claim to the music which is their intellectual property and not that of the music industry.
2) It showed myself and legions of others that one could break out of any predetermined "mold" society has set up for us and break new ground and explore new possibilities, even that of being a Black Rockstar.
I love, love, love this movie!
