Paper Mario: The Origami King is a very open-world game, which is a very nice addition compared to the rest of the series. However, this game fails both gameplay-wise and story-wise. There is no incentive to battle, making fighting enemies feel like more of a nuisance than actual fun half of the time. I’ll admit, the boss battles were quite enjoyable. They were a nice challenge, and I enjoyed finding out how to defeat them.
The most disappointing part of this game is how it’s story completely fails to be original and unique. There are next to no unique characters in this story, making it feel incredibly bland. I’m not saying we need another Thousand Year Door, but I just wish we could have the originality that game had. It had unique characters, like the partners, punies, x-naut army, and soooo many more. It makes me sad to see a series I once loved so much decline this badly. I hope one day Intelligent Systems finally creates another great Paper Mario game.
