It does tackle a lot of cultural issues and how being born between so many cultures has an effect on how you connect with others. There has been some criticism that the depiction of the protagonist's sexuality seems inaccurate. I suppose it is one perspective. The protagonist suffers from many different things: an eating disorder, abusive parents, abusive relationships, gender normativity, heterornormativity, lack of cultural nuances. The protagonist herself is at times horribly abusive and mean. The fact she can lapse into such things makes the character relatable in some ways and petty in others, which I believe was authorial intent.
It is a fascinating read and can be informative and for POCs it is relatable on the sense of feeling out of place in regards to cultures and Westernisations and how one connects with world. The novel is an exploration of perceived 'otherness': sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, transnationality, prejudices, habits, behaviours, mental health and relationships with others.
