I think John Grisham wanted to write a war story. That part of the story was developed well. I did not like the story about Pete and his revenge killing as well as his refusal to tell anyone why he did it. His wife was told he was missing in action and presumed dead. She had an affair. Pete was unable to forgive her. It did not seem believable and makes him an unlikable character. And his family had to suffer for his actions.
