The first time I saw this I was 9 years old.
My jaw dropped to the floor.
For me as a 9 year old German boy these were things I had never seen before and much of this simply blew my mind.
Living under water, the exit of the ship from the ocean, the video phone where they had to look around to see where the person was in the room that they were talking to etc. etc.
It was really fantastic.
I rediscovered it 10 years ago by coincident on youtube.
Instantly was transferred back in time when I saw this first.
Mind you, this was not a cheap series. The studio almost went bankrupt. The tricks they used where done without computer, some, or many of them never done before. The guys who did the tricks went on for many more movies, the costume designers won many prizes. Everybody went nuts on the staff that made this movie.
There is a book out that details all that by a man who truly can be called the #1 fan.
Many of the actors where already well established, famous before they ever came to Spaceship Orion.
The writing was excellent, these dialogs would stand the test of time even today.
There is also some funny things, like plastic beer cups for ceiling lights, bathroom fixtures for controls, pencil sharpeners for navigation equipment and lets not forget the iron as a laser beam accumulator!
For its time, a great show.
50% of all TV's in Germany where tuned to this show.
Spend a few minutes there if you will.
Good luck,
Bernd Licht
