Was this show nearly as good as it was hyped up to be? No. Was it as good as some people were describing? No. Was it a good show? Yes.
Where the Witcher shines over other shows I've seen is in the camera work. Some of the best I've ever experienced, given that the show is shot in a studio. It makes the environment of the show feel very immersive as if you're actually there with the characters. Great camera work, great atmosphere. Now let's talk about the bad. The only correct casting choice in this show was the actor chosen to play Jaskier (The spunky charismatic bard, in the games known as Dandelion and ultimately serves as Geralt's sidekick, and as the punching bag of the show) Henry Cavill's performance as Geralt was mediocre. While the attitude and personality of Geralt were captured almost to a tee, it's his appearance that really bothers me. In the books, Geralt is described as a more slender, decent looking white-haired grizzled old witcher. In this show, he's a "6'2" overly-hunky muscular man sandwich who looks not a day over 29. He is just too big and that is excessively distracting and draws attention away from what's meant to be focused on. yennefer's actress was not a great choice either. While her actress is not bad at her job, she was bad at this role. She came off as if she's never read the books before, and was given a loose poorly written summary of the character of Yennefer and told to use that. Ciri is probably the biggest joke of the series. Apart from the fact that she is an emotionless plank of wood, her character was completely bastardized into being this (frankly stupid) poverty-stricken princess who makes really bad friendship choices and has terrible listening skills. The plot of the show is pretty much, "Geralt find Ciri" "Ciri find Geralt" and be given no clear path or clues to at least get a start on finding each other. The Nilfgaardian's are dressed in crumpled up cloth instead of being the iron-clad intimidating soldiers they're supposed to be. Geralt wears one suit of armor the entire series and underneath, is an overly "David Bowie Labyrinth" style outfit that is probably the weirdest-looking ensemble he wears. I love the Geralt Roach relationship dynamic. Roach is Geralt's only friend and he's often shown talking to his horse as if she can understand him. He'll make camp in the wilderness and often vent to his horse about his frustrations of being a witcher, and life in general. This is a very "Man's best friend" mechanic and works really well. Overall, this show is about 6.5/10. I could ramble on but I'm sure I've lost the attention of the average reader for typing too many words. What I will say, is this show is worth a watch, and I'll update my review if anything changes in season 2.
