This show is special. I have binge watched many shows in my day, but nothing comes even close to this.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist was not something that I would normally watch. I would probably put it on my list of TV series I want to watch and then forget about it, but when I found out Skylar Astin stars in this (and he has an amazing voice), I went and gave it a try.
This has changed my life for the better, and I'm not exaggerating. It has touched on topics that I have personally struggled with, it has given me hope, and inspiration, and some serious life advice. The writing is truly exquisite, the cast (most of whom are not professional singers) are amazing at everything, and the soundtrack is really something special.
Jane Levy starring as the aspiring Zoey Clarke was the most beautiful portrayal of a character I have seen in a long, long time. She fits so well with the character that it really makes way to your heart. The thing that adds so much is that she's not a beautiful woman per se, nor is she particularly adorable (I'm not saying that she isn't, she's just special in her adorability) she's just herself. A nerdy girl with questionable dress code, and that's what makes her special.
Skylar Astin as Max is really heartwarming because of how wholesome Max is portrayed. Alex Newell as Mo is really a sight for sore eyes as a gender fluid, and he (she?) is the heart and soul of the movie, someone who is like the audience in his view and commentary. But John Clarence Stewart as Simon is truly the mini cherry on top of the regular cherry on top of this sundae of awesomeness that is this show, with his character being funny, caring, charming and just someone you would love from the very first sight.
The cinematography, the filming, the decoration and the wardrobe department of this show are also absolutely fantastic. How every scene is different in lighting and colour to fit in with the context, how vibrant it is in heartwarming and happy moments and how bland it seems in darker times, all the while focusing on the main character beautifully with the contrast of clothes.
And finally, the music. The music is... special. It's so well done with how it exhibits the emotions in each person through music that you would feel it in your bones. I have cried several times while watching this show (and the last time I cried about a show was the finale of HIMYM).
This show is not perfect (The logics about the songs is inconsistent at best). But it comes really close, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The most touching show I have ever seen.
