Gotham City is wonderfully portrayed; a crumbling, dirty, uncaring place. You felt trapped in it. Nothing of any real substance happens. Phoenix’s performance is magnetic but I could not emphasise with his character. There was none to emphasise with. All I got was a great deal of self-pity. Only bad things happen to him. This is the focus of film. I understand it is meant to be dark and gritty but his bad luck was gratuitous and therefore hard to believe. It’s disappointing, I was really looking forward to seeing a different angle on these comic book characters.
