You may have an error in the display case. The piece of wood the you think is dyed purple may actually be Peltogyne. Known commercially as Purple Heart. It is exactly the right color. If this is the case, it is common from Mexico down through Brazil. If it is used for book binding, it would be a pirates Captains log or Cartographers map book. It is commonly used as flooring and decorative decking on boats. If it is exposed to ultraviolet light for about a month it will turn brown as walnut.
