These wholly negative reviews are honestly beyond me, being around 20 hours into the game. It seems like a lot of people didn't enjoy the game, and that's fine of course, but it also seems like for many that the game just isn't for you, which doesn't make a lot of these reviews reliable. I hate racing games, so me giving them 1 star because they're not what I want them to be is ridiculous. This is more in general and not about Google reviews mind you.
For many people, this is EXACTLY what we wanted. It's an RPG with top-down shooter mechanics and a pretty interesting story with just as interesting characters. It's most definitely not without it's negatives, but there are very few games I would ever give 5 stars and actually think they are perfect. 5 stars is still 95% out of 100% at best for me.
The narrative is solid, the fighting is solid, and the scope to use your imagination to solve problems you come across in the game is something that's far above most other games these days. On top of that, it's not overly complicated that makes it highly accessible to mostly anyone that wants to play it. Also, due to how the game is designed, there is most definitely replay value here as well.
Do you want to be a good character and do everything you can without killing, stealing, or making morally gray or dark decisions, go for it. Want to play as evil and not only rain death upon your opponents, but also innocents if they get in your way as well as stealing and selling items back to vendors? Go for it. Want to be a mix of both and cause chaos? The choice is there. The things you do show up in the newpaper and sometimes in mailboxes. The deepness of the reputation system isn't a deep as say Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but I think it's fine not to be overall restricted by this system.
The use of ambient sounds instead of music in most places was a deliberate choice and makes the world feel as desolate and lonely as it actually is. I love the lack of music and it wouldn't be the same with constant music playing as you travel.
Events are (mostly) random as you travel the map, and if you don't go out of your way to unlock everything on the first go, it allows unique plays each time you play. Also, if you play a pacifist run, you're not require to kill the big bad (at least in earlier chapters) and they will be placed on a bounty board so you may choose if you want to gun them down later. THe choice is yours.
As far as negatives? Not a fan of the reused tile-sets in battles. They could have spent more time making more unique tilesets. I think it was a bit lazy in this regard. Battle is sometimes a little *too* chaotic, but that's honestly just a minor nitpick. Also, the ridiculous strength that your posse can have once you beef them up... the player can fix this themselves so that's not really a negative. (just don't beef up your posse or even play with one other than... characters I won't say due to spoilers) That said, the AI can be stupid sometimes, both your Posse AI and the enemy AI. That said, I'm playing on Normal so this may or may not have bearing on AI intelligence.
Can't say much on the story at this very moment, but so far it's been very solid and has shown the perspective of many types of people in the West and I've seen nothing negative about it just yet.
Overall VERY solid game that people who actually like this type of game will enjoy. It's not perfect, but it's still a great time. Outside of Elden Ring, I haven't been this compelled to finish a game in the last decade, if I'm honest, so this is a drink of water in the desert.
Of course stars are subject to change once I complete the game.
