I don't usually write reviews for things but hopefully this gives the movie better name because I'm seeing that the reviews about this movie are claiming that it's bad without actually being able to explain how it's a bad movie, while some say its good, and can't explain how it's good either. The top review about this movie giving it 2 stars was also written by someone who DIDN'T EVEN WATCH THE MOVIE, yet they're trying to write a review about it.... why?
I think this movie does really well combining metalhead culture with horror and comedy. You can see that throughout the movie they made sure to include several themes that metalheads would be drawn to while making sure to not take them or itself too seriously, allowing for a lot of hilarious moments.
While the practical/digital effects in the movie aren't really the best, there are a few that were very well done and I'd say are on par with something like Terrifier in terms of the visceral reactions they might evoke.
The characters, while not being 100% likeable or good at everything are very well-written and them being so flawed serves to humanize them more and sort of break the stigma surrounding metalheads. Zakk's apathetic, self-indulgent, tough guy personality contrasts well with Brodie's more anxious, timid, and restrained demeanor, showing that individuals who are metalheads can be drastically different from each other, and yet still be good friends who are willing to reconcile after any issues or make sacrifices to help the other, even making Zakk sort of a prototypical Eddie Munson.
I think that reviewer was blaming their own short attention span, and inability to watch this film without immediately comparing it to some form of mainstream media like Diary of a Wimpy Kid on the movie just being bad. Which couldn't be further from the truth as this movie isn't anything like Diary of a Wimpy Kid in any way besides the theme of the main character/his friends being social outcasts, and that the main character is a teenager/still in school. Yeah, DOAWK definitely isn't the first movie to have done that.
Finally, the movie's ending and post-credit sequence were very entertaining and rewarding. While the ending itself was admittedly quite predictable, it does not lessen in emotional impact and the post-credit sequence certainly does well to subvert the viewer's expectations in a humorous way while setting up for a sequel at the same time.
All in all it was a very fun and entertaining film that I would recommend watching, although maybe watch it alone or with someone who you know might be able to handle it. Very excited to see what they do if/when a Deathgasm 2 is made!
