His historical narrative is assuring to the novice and the expert because his quick review of the pre-republican period sets the stage for a well balanced exploration of the key issues and major players in what is a fascinating period in human history. Mikes history is short, and albeit like all history is a re-hashing of a finite group of sources and archeological finds, but his choice of "this" time period to focus his talents on speaks volumes on what and where we as a society need to focus in "our" time.
