The movie was phenomenal. My favorite character was through the lens that SHE wanted me to see her in. My questions were answered and tied in a neat little bow.
And YES! They explain Budapest. Teasers for Iron Heart. Teasers for a Ronin show. Nods to the comic book arc. Connections to the Winter Soldier and Captain America world building. It was so fun to make all of these connections and understand why she helped Hawkeye all those years ago, why she negotiated with Loki like that, and why she fell in love with Bruce before moving onto something else.
I love Black Widow as a character. She’s not only
the anti-hero we knew her to be, she reveals to us that she is “all fluff”, a quality she saw in Bruce, and that’s why she fell in love him all those years ago.
Her character is very relatable in the detached emotional persona she has. She can be sobbing on the inside but you could never tell. A master poker face and manipulator to the very end. Kind of like Drax the Destroyer. As a neurodivergent, I relate to both of those characters the most. It’s nice to see it.
The story was told in a subtle way just the way Black Widow coming off her comic book page herself would tell it. I’m glad creative control was finally given to those who truly understood how to tell this story and do it justice.
Honestly, it’s refreshing to see a female character be portrayed as flawed and heroic. She’s kind of an underdog who overcame a lifetime of horrific traumatic abuse. She was thrown away. They thought she wouldn’t be able to make it. She ended up saving 50% of the entire universe and every soul in the sacred timeline. An underdog in every sense of the word.
Loki spent all his time for his “glorious purpose”, and Black Widow just used the small tools she had in creative ways and had the ultimate glorious purpose in the end. No wonder she is capable of outsmarting him. No wonder she was so afraid of the Hulk. 😭 no wonder she’s “Auntie Nat”. I cried pretty much the entire movie.
She literally wins her battles by exploiting the enemy’s hubris with a coy smile as she takes punch after punch. You never see female characters be portrayed that way. It was refreshing to be represented on such a global scale such as a big budget Marvel film. FINALLY! I don’t need to watch an old cartoon to see the “token relatable female character who’s actually written well.” This movie was a win for adequate female representation everywhere. Yes everyone. Women are some tough creatures and it is nice to see an emotionally stable and beloved female hero have her due.
I liked this better than Wonder Woman. That’s saying something. This is now my favorite movie. Of all time. Go 👏🏼see👏🏼it.
Here’s the answers I got:
1. They explain Budapest
2. WE SEE WANDA’S VISION and UNDERSTAND IT it’s not what you think 😱 I gasped out loud
3. We solidify the Red Room backstory and “Black Widow” title. We accept the “family” and “sister”. Yelena really is a Black Widow, just not in a way that was predictable. She had big shoes to fill for the franchise after Nat; but her secret is that she doesn’t even want to fill them. What a cool way to introduce a character without it being forced like I thought it would be.
4. I understand Nat’s motivations character motivations now, and I understood the true significance of all Loki said to her, namely Drakoff’s daughter and the hospital fire. But we also learned what “the famous black widow, turns out she’s just a pretty face” really means.
