William Manchester, of whom I have read four of his titles, is excellent at "casual narrative history." About the best of the lot is GLORY AND THE DREAM. I would read the second volume 100 times if I could; it reads like a good historical novel,

Brilliant. Gave the world a chance to see Peter Weller (heretofore a history prof in upstate NY) and John Lithgow in their first starring roles (so far as I'm aware). My ex-wife and I were the only ones in our circle of friends who either liked it or understood it.
