This movie could have been really good, the screen writing could have maintained the innocence of the protagonists especially with the dialogue.
The police violence could have worked with innocent, hard working motivated youth achieving in school and arguably would have been more emotional with characters that weren't so angry and quick with profanity. The contrast would have been interesting anyways.
As an aside - between this film and Rim of the World, I'm a little ticked with Netflix portraying minority child characters as foul mouthed and obnoxious. These are little more than the stereotypes we've seen black and Puerto Rican characters packaged into for many years.
That isn't to say characters need to act white, too the contrary, the older characters in See You Yesterday and even the music and settings offered insight into minority communities culture that is refreshing and interesting but the writing surrounding the main characters is just off.
If you're listening Netflix, let minority kid characters have the same innocence and uniqueness that we see with white characters.
