This film is brilliantly crafted. One of the best mystery serial killer movies ever.
I watched it last night and still can't get it out of my head.
I love the way bong ho narrates. He is definitely a great story teller. not only with dialogs, but with scenes, with the atmosphere, with deep characters he make. This film is a very good example of visual story telling.
The story is about a serial killer commiting a series of murders in specific times in a small town in South korea, actually the first Korean serial killer!
It happens in 1986 when the there is a conflict between people and government and people are protesting in streets time to time. And in the chaos this guy rises. As if he represents the circumstances of the society.
There are 2 detectives trying to solve this insoluble case with totally different personalites and perspectives. We go through the story from their perspective but also from a unique perspective belonging to us, the audience! (We see things they dont)
The director makes this environment for you which is at the same time dreadful and beautiful. Its astonishing scenes of nature and then mindblowing murders. And I love that sense of dark comedy which is flowing in the mayhems and paradoxical engagements between people and in the police.
Acts are perfect and cinematography next level.
The movie really takes you to this village in that time space. its realistic and makes you wonder in many moments. And it definitely has one of the BEST ENDINGS I have ever seen...
