this was the worst book i’ve ever read. finch is so pretentious and annoying that the entire book becomes so unbearable. the characters have no chemistry and are honestly boring. i feel like the author just chose stereotypical characters and then slapped a sad backstory onto them and didn’t bother to make them unique and likable. finch especially. he was just so utterly predictable and annoying. if you know the tv show riverdale, he reminds me of jughead. especially that “in case you haven’t noticed: i’m weird. i’m a weirdo. i don’t fit in” scene. he also reminds me of the song creep by radiohead. he’s meant to be a misunderstood teenager but instead i literally (spoilers) celebrated his death. the entire premise of the story is cool but it goes about it in such a dumb way. violet never properly overcomes her struggles, she’s just forced into it which i think is lazy writing. and finch has zero development. hearing about his mental health was good, but they tied it to violet too much. if you’re going to write a love story about two mentally ill teens, you shouldn’t act like this mental illness is a quirky part of his personality. you should delve into it and develop his character instead of tiptoeing around it and trying to preserve the love aspect of everything. all in all, i enjoyed the mental health portion of the book. but the characters didn’t have enough personality and they had no chemistry together. you can’t force two characters to like each other.
