An absolute masterpiece of storytelling. Spoilers will follow:
Whoever has been discussing Joel dying, should have definitely seen it coming via the trailers. Yes you play as Abby for half the game, but from her perspective and what she goes through really drives the point home on why she did what she did. Revenge is cyclical, and we see Ellie doing things we would not expect her to do. From Abby's standpoint the killing of Joel is justified even though it seems a weak move. In the end we see what this entire journey has done to Ellie. Weak, emancipated having lost everyone she loves including Dina and nothing she does is going to get Joel back. To me that was the only way this game could have ended. Abby takes a high road because of Lev and Ellie takes a high road, because when she's drowning Abby, the face that flashes in from of her is not Joel on his last breath, it's Joel playing a guitar. The journeys Ellie and Abby have, warp both of them beyond what we saw at the beginning of the game. And both live on to live with the consequences of their actions. Truly a kind of story videogames do not tell ever.
