As someone who is not a fan of most silent films, this one stands out. The minimal use of title cards allows for a viewing experience that trusts the audience to understand the story mostly through visuals. The cinematography and effects are a sight to behold, especially considering the time period in which this was made.
The story is simple and timeless, going so far as to not explicitly name the characters. What allows this film to transcend others is a perfect blend of great, silent acting with genius filmmaking.
