The most underrated film of Bollywood in the recent years,Tumbbad is the best thriller period movie in the last few years.
Plot
The film begins(voice over) in 1940's Pune before independence, Vinyak Rao explaining his son Panduranga Rao about the ancestral treasure in his village Tumbbad and also the curse the village still holds by virtue of the greed of their villagers, who build a temple for banished notorious god.
Purti ki Devi (the goddess who provides wealth and grains to the whole world) gives birth to all crores of gods and her stomach is earth,she continuously release gold coins from one hand and food grains from other, her first son Hastar takes hold of all gold coins released by the Goddess and tries to conquer the food grains too.The rest of the gods get angry and attacks Hastar. As the goddess is very fond of her first born she saves him by hiding him in her womb assuring the rest of the gods that Hastar will not be worshipped and his god status is completely removed. Hastar with all the gold coins he stole takes rest in his mother's womb for several centuries until when a temple is built for him in Tumbbad. Other Gods curse the village that it always rain heavily there.
Cut to 1918....Sadashiv and Vinayak are two young boys living with their mother in an ever raining village of Tumbbad. Their mother works as a servant maid in the palace of the village head Sarkar. As the boys are waiting for their mother to return from work,their main concern is to feed their grand mother if their mother doesn't return on time.
Who is their grand mother, why are they afraid so much to feed her in the absence of their mother, what is the story of the gold coins forms a gripping narrative of the three chapters that the film is divided into. Excellent VFX which looks exactly natural, good performances, edge of the seat thrilling experience due to perfect sound effects. Cinematography is first class
