Horizon: Forbidden West is a great game, make no mistake... and I'm certain newcomers to the series and old timers will like it.
That said- do not listen to the people calling it a "masterpiece," 9/10, 95%, etc. This is simply inaccurate and untrue, and I question the honesty & intentions of anyone saying otherwise.
Why? Well, the game has some major problems and flaws.
• Performance is terrible (on PS5 + even on Performance Mode) when compared directly to Horizon: Zero Dawn. Poorly polished & optimized. Lots of jerky animations, bad pathing, frame drops, strange visuals bugs, movement feels bad, jumping feels (and looks) bad, items & interactable objects not being recognized properly, etc.
The game needed another year of tweaks and optimizations. That smooth, seamless parkour and movement you got in Zero Dawn? It isn't here. There's some other gripes as well such as the uncanny valley faces, but the poor performance is the biggest thing, and it's unacceptable.
• One other thing I wanted to talk about is that this game (unlike the first) has some of the worst storytelling and writing I've seen in a while. Characters aren't likable or believable in the slightest & their development is poor. Everyone is short, stuck up, and condescending at all times including Alloy. The dialogue is very cringe inducing, hollow and surface level. It's as if the writer just expected players to like everyone without putting in any work, unlike in Zero Dawn where you're given reasons to like people.
Overall, Forbidden West is a lazy, half-baked sequel to the first game, which is disappointing to say the least, as the potential is insane. It looks like the corporate overlords got their hands on another game. That's not to say it's bad: the music is amazing, the crafting system is good, and the combat can be very fun at times. But there's not much else.
I'd give this game a 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.
