The Rise of Skywalker was fine, I guess.
Pros: The visuals were stunning, and at moments, downright terrifying. Imagine being a very young Star Wars fan watching how downright DARK the imagery is. It's a bit scary. Scared me.
The cameos! The nostalgia! Lando Calrissian!
Cons: Messy, messy, messy. Look, I'm a 38-year-old fan (and have been a fan of the franchise for 30 of those years.) I get that they have to put a pin in the Skywalker saga. It's done. I'm OK with it. But, I'm honestly more intrigued now by the side stories that touch the original movies, like Rogue One. I hope they make more of those side stories and origin stories.
I say messy because the story kind of goes in fits and starts. There are awkward, almost comedic, pauses. Time filler. That's annoying. Just move the plot line forward. Some of the plot points even get tired (Oh no, this character is dead - wait no they aren't! Oh no, this character is never going to be the same one we know and love, oh wait, never mind they'll be OK. Lots of "gotcha" moments to tug on the heartstrings. Either kill the character off, or don't.
Overall: No one really ever dies, not really, in the Disneyed Star Wars multiverse. And if you don't like it - get over it.
If you're a fan, you really should see it, just to know what happens. And definitely see it in the theater, for that whole experience.
It's not bad. It's not good. It's OK.
