Before going into the review, there is something I have to say. And yes, it's related. I have watched the movie after reading the books. I'm also an avid fan of the Artemis Fowl series. So big of a fan am I that it has inspired most of my life decisions. I want to be as smart as Artemis Fowll II and just like Holly Short. Because of this, I want to comment on some of the reviews I read. I don't believe fans wanted a page by page movie. I believe they, like me, wanted a movie that stuck to the plot of the first book and didn't completely butcher iconic characters.
Now to the review. Starting on the positive. I see this as a movie families, kids, and those (as well as maybe some optimistic fans) people who have not read the books to enjoy. The acting was decent, the CGI was great, and the backgrounds and non character scenes were great. Though there are those who are grossed out by the Mulch digging scene, I liked it because that was what I imagined when I read the books.
Now to the other aspects. First off, characters were butchered. Other reviewers have gone into this so I won't. To put it simply, they changed most of the important characters and took out inspiring character arcs. The fans of the books know what I'm talking about. I understand that Disney wanted a more kid friendly and less risky characters. But by changing characters, a lot of the story got changed. In the movie, they kept a few of the main plot points, but the rest of the story NEVER HAPPENED in the books. This part made me mad.
After I realized how different it was, I took as a story INSPIRED by the books and not a movie of the books. Thinking this way, I was able to get through the movie and kinda enjoyed it.
But if anyone knows or meets me in real life, don't ask my opinion because I will go on a nerd rant for three hours. Even so, no matter how mad I am at the movie, it still deserves a fair review so that is why it is a three star. The positives made it so.
