I don’t know the history. If you just want to hear the songs, well that’s probably okay, but the story is, logically or morally, very disturbing - except Anita. Anita is the only character that’s great!
1. Okay I get it, for this movie, looks like LOVE IS EVERYTHING. So Maria doesn’t care about her family at all. All she cares is to sleep/kiss Tony right after he KILLED her brother. Pounding on his chest or head meet don’t show you struggle. :) BROTHER is NOTHING to HER! When Anita was heartbroken and Maria still made out with Tony then Anita found out, she still defend Tony and ask Anita to forgive him.
2. that disturbs me is Anita entered the drug store, and all those guys were humiliating her. The old lady stopped them but they just left, don’t looks like they’ve changed or actually apologizing.
I just feel there are so many nonsenses and actors could have express more emotion, fullfill the story with more flesh!
Last small part, Bernardo said to Tony they like to lock down brown people. At the end, still brown people huh. Cool I get it he should go, but still, such sarcasm.
I just cannot relate to the movie but feeling disturbing.
Remaking doesn’t mean you could assume every new audience watched the old one and just to watch this for comparing.
Musical doesn’t mean you could only focus on singing instead of fulfill the story, logically and morally.
Overall, I don’t think it’s a successful movie.
