The biggest issue this game has is that it will not run well on just any PC/laptop. If you have a regular or fairly good PC/laptop you will have a horrible experience and will find it almost unplayable, even if you go to Settings > Graphics and change to 'Low'. If you don't have a PC or laptop designed to run modern games, don't waste your money buying this game. Buy an older Nancy Drew game.
This is definitely why there are so many 1 star reviews and where Her Interactive/Mipumi went wrong. Nancy Drew fans are not 'hardcore gamers' for the most part and just won't have a PC with the specs to run this game. Not sure what they were thinking.
Having said this, when it does run as it is supposed to, minus the characters looking uncomfortable and behaving strangely, the game actually looks good and runs pretty well. Older fans and new ones would appreciate it.
The second biggest probelm with this game is the lack of puzzles. The series is renowned for it's puzzle solving aspect and I can count the total ammount in this game on two hands... They were also not very complex (required guess work as opposed to 'solving') or fun and some material required to solve them was vague at times.
The biggest possitive the game has is it's story. It presents a great mystery to solve with a spooky theme and throws you into the action fairly quickly. Although some of the characters come off as annoying, their role in the story and mystery was done really well.
The controls however have taken a step back. In the later Her Interactive Nancy games navigating is a breeze and never feels like you are restricted by much (even in most of the older games honestly). If you can see something you can interact with in your field of view, you can interact with it or an arrow will at least appear and take you towards the point of interest.
In this game however, even if you can see something you can interact with, you have to walk in an annoying pre-determined grid that does not allow any leniency with where you can walk. Nor would it be the path any normal person would take to get to the destination. You then need to have the object or path right in front of your face before you can interact with it.
With all the negatives I have given this game you may wonder why I give it 3 stars. I actually did have fun playing it, enjoyed the story and how it all wrapped up. If there is to be another entry in the series however, Her Interactive and Mipumi really need to look at these reviews and make some big changes.
