Okay, quick backstory of how I actually found out about this movie. And mind you, I am not a typical person to be able to sit and watch an entire movie.
I was watching an older interview between Howard Stern and Hilary Clinton and they both said they loved the movie. So, that same night, I sit down and watched it beginning to end. I literally could NOT stop watching.
First impressions: Tom Hanks’ adaptation of Fred Rogers is absolutely remarkable.
It seems no matter the role, Tom always goes the extra mile, and then some, to get into character. I read that he watched countless hours of the Mr. Rogers television program; and it obviously paid off. Also, it is worth mentioning that Tom Hanks did such an amazing adaption of Fred Rogers. Everything from how Mr. Rogers did the intro to every episode, to every little facial expression, made you completely engulfed into believing that it was actually Fred Rogers in the movie instead of Tom Hanks.
I think I should note: When I went into watching this movie, I was under the impression that it was going to be solely focused on the life of Mr. Fred Rogers. That was not the case.
And, that is most definitely NOT a complaint.
The heartwarming story of a journalist with so many hard and depressing life issues that so many of us can relate to, is an AMAZING plot.
——
Said journalist is put on an unexpected, and, at first not enthused about, assignment to profile Mr. Rogers for the “Hero” edition of Esquire magazine. (Which is completely different from the investigative reporting he is accustomed to.)
He is very hesitant at first and at the beginning stages of his interviewing, but with the kind words that Mr. Rogers says to him, he’s able to relate everything said to him into all of the negative situations happening in his own life.
That’s all I’ll say, to prevent a spoiler alert, but, trust me, this is an absolute MUST SEE for every family in America. To help us remember how truly remarkable a man Mr. Fred Rogers really was and how it’s so sad to see such an icon and past time be behind us. Especially in the world we live in today.
