Going into this movie I was so sure I'm going to just drop it half-way given the reviews, but I finished the movie pleasantly surprised from start to finish. The world building, the cinematography, the lighting and the suspense are great. There isn't much of a bloodbath & relatively little violence or gore given its setting but it doesn't need to be. Nevertheless, what I find most applaudable is that it doesn't make the Japanese people in Japan speak accented English with one another or whenever Jared Leto is in the scene just because, like what Hollywood tends to do and that's the right decision to make. (It should be a given but Hollywood's track record is real bad at that so every step forward is commendable)
Jared Leto's acting is surprisingly good in this, especially fresh out of his last major big-screen appearance as the Joker, one can see the effort he placed upon this role, and his Japanese (however few lines there were throughout) was pretty accurate. Was hoping they'd flesh out his character a little more, like what his motives were and how he went from a war captain for the enemy to willingly join the Yakuza along with his general appreciation of Japanese culture, but I guess it does add a mysterious element to it.
Rating: A little over 4.5 but I'll just round it off to 5.
