Walson “Wal” Li

OK. This movie has a lot of dramatic and unrealistic scenes that are more commonly seen in Chinese films, but I do not think this style fits the taste of most Westerners. Also, as a Disney movie, most of the audience probably expected singing and traditional Disney characteristics: things that weren't delivered. As a native Chinese speaker, I can't help but cringe during parts of Mulan because there are so many deeper meanings that are lost through the translation from Chinese to English. Much of the speech is forced and heavily accented; if only this movie had been made in Chinese. The cultural accuracy is also questionable, and paints a misleading image of the China and it's people. I get that this movie is meant to show the power of women, and I believe that it accomplishes this goal. However, the mix of Chinese and American doesn't really work in my opinion and the movie sits in the awkward spot between two distinct tastes and styles.
