Remember the time. Inspiring, evocative and ultimately so very human. Jodie at her absolute best; deeply touching with an element of malice introduced by her governmental greasy pole climbing nemesis played by James Woods. Asks so many questions; poses answers, but nothing definite. Proof is absolute to underpin cost of the project. The vicious question of archaic faith raises its ugly head, as it still does today. If the movie has any purchase on latter day society it is to drive a giant dagger into the pervasive throwback concept of religion; a shoddy dying culture scrambling for significance in a progressive society. I loved the movie; loved the concept, and was utterly smitten by her character. A lovely interplay between her and Matthew; she representing science, he representing the warming embrace of simply not knowing. At least he was there for her when it mattered; says not for his espoused beliefs but more to the frailty of the human as a single entity against the malign wishes of those who desire more and more control.
