Mortal Engines is a deeply interesting book for many reasons. It is set in a post-apocalyptic planet, where cities are motorised, and attack each other for resources. In the middle of the crossfire is a young, stubborn, (and in my opinion, attention-deficit to the current environment) boy Tom Natsworthy, who idolises an explorer called Thaddeus Valentine, and is infatuated with his daughter Katherine. One day, they meet, before Thaddeus is brutally attacked by a hooded person coined Hester the Ugly. Tom goes after her, before she jumps off the city, Tom nearing her. They get attacked by air pirates, sky pirates, slave traders. All in all, it is a deeply thrilling adventure with an epic conclusion. Worth a read.
