Vaazhai (3.5/5) - Movies showing the life in a hamlet so realistically has become so rarest in this time of hyper urbanisation and smart cities. Very good, Mari and his team scores mainly for that. Everyone - cinematographer, cast, art director, music director too - has done his/her job very well, not extraordinary as depicted in the social media. There had been better movies. Many would have been carried away with the way Dir Bala and few others enacted 😀😉 after watching movie. Mere marketing gimmicks, as word of mouth, to have more footfalls.
Life in a village is in stark contrast to what we get to see in even a town. The inhabitants have brotherhood and find pleasure in simplicity that we have to imbibe, than yearning for upgrade in our want. Villagers live for their basic needs, especially to fight their hunger. They live for the day, with the daily wages.
Mari Selvaraj has brought our childhood memories, for those who had experienced such a village life, as spectators too at times. Be that greenery, water front and childhood crush, even eagerly waiting for the vacation or the rare festivities, during which we get to feast, watch movies and celebrate by meeting, greeting & spending time with the relatives, to get their blessings - money they give becomes the kid's pocket money or savings. 😀😀 This happens to be three fourth of the movie that takes us to a different world.
But, his brand is seen all over though not as much as in his previous movies. The climax is very impactful. Be the final few minutes and some more in the 2nd half, could have been edited to make it more special and sharper for the message Mari wanted to convey. Honestly, I am not much in favor of his intent, to bring upon or show the divide between communities or caste. He seems to just prick on the known, 'not-so-healing for centuries' wound, to trigger the emotions to showcase certain sect as victims, to mint box office revenue. Same as the other director. (At least for me. I may be ignorant of his noble actions may be).
If he is a real change maker, let him share openly the profit (yes, this is his production too) with the needy folks. Stand publicly against such, misusing the society for personal gains. Otherwise, it will become yet another 'template movie' like Shankar does with his movies. He took a movie on corruption in the 1990s (Indian) and the subject remains the same in 2023 even, for Indian2. Certain things are beyond our influence, and we should aim to be the truest example, role model for what we preach.
